A client relationship that began two decades ago rarely looks the same today. Justin Nelson, Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at JP Morgan Private Bank, has watched that shift firsthand as the families he advises have grown to include new generations of decision makers.
When Clients Become Families
“There are a lot of clients that I’ve known for over 20 years, “Nelson says. What started as work with individual principals has, in many cases, expanded into relationships with their children. “It’s not just about the principals, it’s now about their kids and their families. Having the opportunity to partner with them over time is very fulfilling.”
Nelson oversees more than fifteen billion dollars in assets from JP Morgan’s office in Connecticut, guiding families through decisions that stretch across decades rather than single transactions. Justin Nelson JP Morgan credits nearly thirty years in the business for giving him the kind of perspective needed to manage wealth across generations, from a founder’s original decisions to how that wealth eventually passes to their children and grandchildren.
Trust That Compounds
For Justin Nelson, multi-generational relationships are proof that trust, much like an investment portfolio, can build over time. “A lot of that is about trust, and that’s something that you build up with someone over time,” he says. Justin Nelson twenty-person team is learning that same lesson, gradually building the kind of client relationships that can last well beyond a single generation. After three decades at JP Morgan, Nelson says those lasting partnerships remain the clearest sign that his work has made a real difference.
Each new generation brings its own questions and priorities, and Nelson says part of his role is adapting his guidance without losing the trust built by the generation before. It is a balance he expects his team to keep practicing long after he has stepped back from day-to-day client work. Refer to this article for related information.
